MUST SELL! I have a great selection of juvenile desert fan palms. These are mostly hybrids -- a cross between the Mexican Fan Palm (Washingtonia robusta) and the California Fan Palm (Washingtonia filifera). These are very fast growing, stately, great for landscaping, easy to maintain and drought tolerant.
HEIGHT - Height at adulthood depends on various factors such as watering, soil type and fertilization. But heights can reach 20 to 40 feet.
GROWTH RATE - My palms were seeds less than four years ago, but some specimens are several feet tall. Under ideal conditions, these palms grow two feet per year.
ON KAUAI - These palms thrive in hot, dry climates with little rainfall. Perfect for the westside, south shore and Lihue makai. I've seen great specimens in Poipu, Koloa, Kekaha and Waimea. They will grow in other areas, but generally, they don't like wet, humid areas.
WATERING - They are drought tolerant, but do require some water, especially when young. If planted in the ground, they thrive with a dripper (tiny drips of water several hours a day instead one big splash every week). I encourage people to use automated watering because it's easy to forget and hard to be consistent.
SOIL - I plant my fan palms in a deep bed of equal parts of sand, crushed lava rocks, rich planting soil and perlite. These palms need good drainage.
FERTILIZER - They thrive with any palm fertilizer or even generic growth fertilizer.
WHERE - corner of Panini Place and Waimea Canyon Drive, in the Waimea Heights neighborhood above Waimea Town (on the way up to Kokee). Look for palms in the driveway. BEWARE sharp thorns on palms!!! Buyers must provide their own transportation of palms. Prices are $20 per plant. Please give them a good home.
