About Me: Walking

Walking alone in the cool mist before sunrise along Kohala Mountain Road on the Big Island.
I like to walk. Saint Jerome said it best: Solvitur ambulando ("Walking Solves Everything").

  • walking is the First Meditation
  • walking is medicine and stress relief
  • God made your body for walking
  • What's true about life? It depends on a good walk.

  • In 2009, I walked to the summit of Mount Kilimanjaro in Africa. In March 2008, I walked from Los Angeles to San Diego. I walked around Lake Baharia about 200 times (here is a link to Lake Baharia in Google Maps). In 2006 and 2007, I walked across three Hawaiian Islands (including a nine-day walk across the Big Island). I use a handheld GPS unit for navigation. I plan my routes with Google Maps.

    My goals were/are to:
  • get out of my daily routine and see the world by foot
  • do something my young daughters will remember all their lives
  • re-affirm that I believe in great things
  • test myself physically, maybe even lose some weight
  • re-kindle the spirit of exploration and adventure that brought me to Hawaii in 1989

  • Walking along The Strand between Manhattan Beach and Hermosa Beach, California
When I'm on a "walking trip", I typically walk about 20 miles a day (most of which is in the sun, carrying a pack, food and water). I sleep in tents in campgrounds or stay in modest hotels. I buy supplies along the way. I see new things, and also things I've seen before, but at a much slower pace. It's good for me.

To summarize: GET OFF YOUR ASS AND GO FOR A WALK!
