Baby Morey on Kirsten's chest. Morey had been born less than three days before I took this picture at the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit at Kapiolani Medical Center in downtown Honolulu, Island of Oahu, Hawaii. Smiling through her tears, Kirsten holds Baby Morey. Kirsten and I went to visit Morey late at night in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit NICU just two days after she was born. Morey was undergoing treatment that evening, and Kirsten was told that she couldn't interrupt the treatment to hold her. But a sympathetic nurse finally let Kirsten cuddle the baby. It's amazing how something so simple can bring so much joy. I took this picture at the NICU at Kapiolani Medical Center in downtown Honolulu, Island of Oahu, Hawaii. Baby Morey is held up by her Neonatal Intensive Care Unit NICU nurse. Morey had been born only two days before I took this picture at the NICU at Kapiolani Medical Center in downtown Honolulu, Island of Oahu, Hawaii. The tubes on her face are for feeding and to monitor her breathing. This photo was taken on Monday, July 29, 2002 and added to the web on Friday, August 2, 2002. Image copyright 2010 polihale.com |

Kirsten holds Morey and laughs with Morey's nurse, Tannis Magnus, RN. Morey had been born only 36 hours before I took this picture at the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit at Kapiolani Medical Center in downtown Honolulu, Island of Oahu, Hawaii. Kirsten, Baby Morey and me. This was taken just one day after Morey was born at Kapiolani Medical Center in downtown Honolulu, Island of Oahu, Hawaii. The tubes on her face, as scary as they look, are only for monitoring. They are not actually helping her breathe. She breathes on her own. This photo was taken on Sunday, July 28, 2002 and added to the web on Friday, August 2, 2002. Image copyright 2010 polihale.com |

Mother and child bond shortly after birth. I took this picture at the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit at Kapiolani Medical Center in downtown Honolulu, Island of Oahu, Hawaii. So far, this seems to be everyone's favorite picture. This photo was taken on Sunday, July 28, 2002 and added to the web on Friday, August 2, 2002. Image copyright 2010 polihale.com |

Baby Morey sleeps on my chest. She had tubes taped to her face earlier, and when removed, left residue and some discolored skin. Morey had been born only 36 hours before Kirsten took this picture at the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit at Kapiolani Medical Center in downtown Honolulu, Island of Oahu, Hawaii. This photo was taken on Sunday, July 28, 2002 and added to the web on Friday, August 2, 2002. Image copyright 2010 polihale.com |

Kirsten holds Morey just one day after she was born. The nurses kept the baby in the isolette, but often gave Kirsten time to hold her. I took this picture at the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit at Kapiolani Medical Center in downtown Honolulu, Island of Oahu, Hawaii. A perspective of the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit at Kapiolani Medical Center in downtown Honolulu, Island of Oahu, Hawaii. The unit is actually about five times bigger than it appears here. Kirsten is sitting in the middle of the picture, holding Baby Morey. I took this just a few hours after Morey was born. This photo was taken on Saturday, July 27, 2002 and added to the web on Friday, August 2, 2002. Image copyright 2010 polihale.com |

Amidst the cold and sobering atmosphere of an Intensive Care Unit, Kirsten is floating in a different Universe altogether when she holds Baby Morey for the first time. I took this picture only a few hours after Morey was born at Kapiolani Medical Center in downtown Honolulu, Island of Oahu, Hawaii. This photo was taken on Saturday, July 27, 2002 and added to the web on Thursday, August 1, 2002. Image copyright 2010 polihale.com |
