My mother-in-law Lee Morey poses with her two grandchildren, Morey and Sophia on Christmas Eve. This photo was taken on Wednesday, December 24, 2008 and added to the web on Sunday, December 28, 2008.

After cooking a big meal at the end of a long day, my mother-in-law Lee relaxes at the dinner table. I took this at her beach house in Kekaha. In the background, Morey talks to Joe. My mother-in-law Lee invited us over for dinner one Sunday night. She was staying at her beach house in Kekaha, and I really enjoy the warmth and ambience there. It was just about sunset when we arrived, and I took this photo from the back, towards the ocean. Joe is eventually going to put the stepping stones in the ground, he just happened to be arranging them that day. Lee shows Morey how the top of the car goes down. It's a Mercedes-Benz SLK230 convertible. Lee gave it to Joe for Christmas 2004. I took these photos in the driveway of our house in Waimea. Kirsten and Kimberly are in the background. This photo was taken on Thursday, December 30, 2004 and added to the web on Friday, December 31, 2004. Image copyright 2010 polihale.com

Joe and Lee speed off in their new Mercedes-Benz SLK230 convertible. I wonder how fast it goes? I'll have to borrow it someday.... This photo was taken on Saturday, December 25, 2004 and added to the web on Friday, December 31, 2004. Image copyright 2010 polihale.com

Joe and Lee showing off their new toy: a Mercedes-Benz SLK230 convertible. Joe joked that the car is "just big enough for Lee and Pearl". This photo was taken on Saturday, December 25, 2004 and added to the web on Friday, December 31, 2004. Image copyright 2010 polihale.com

While Joe and Lee were getting ready to leave our house on Christmas Day, Morey saw the chance to get in the driver's seat of Joe's new car. Lee Morey's grandmother gave her husband Joe a Mercedes-Benz SLK230 convertible for Christmas. His debut drive was up to our house in Waimea on Christmas morning. It's hard to see, but behind the Mercedes, in the shadows of the carport, is another German convertible, my piece of shit Volkswagen Cabrio. I bought it new in 2001, but I've beaten it up pretty good. Plus, little things keep breaking. I know, it's hard to believe quality Mexican workmanship has defects. Maybe next year I'll be the one getting a Mercedes??? This photo was taken on Saturday, December 25, 2004 and added to the web on Sunday, December 26, 2004. Image copyright 2010 polihale.com

Joe and Lee show off their new toy. At least Joe is watching the road. This photo was taken on Saturday, December 25, 2004 and added to the web on Friday, December 31, 2004. Image copyright 2010 polihale.com

Joe's new toy: a Mercedes-Benz SLK230 convertible. My mother-in-law Joe's wife gave it to him for Christmas 2004. This photo was taken on Saturday, December 25, 2004 and added to the web on Friday, December 31, 2004. Image copyright 2010 polihale.com

My wife Kirsten embraces our daughter Morey at my mother-in-law's house in Koloa on the island of Kauai, Hawaii. We were there for a Christmas Party, and arrived a little early. So Kirsten and Morey just curled up on a couch with a DVD player and some children's videos. The furniture and ambience in that house always lends a warm, exotic feel. Kirsten in the middle, in front of the tree conducts a Chinese Auction at a Christmas party at my mother-in-law's house. Hawaii has a unique spin on the 'Secret Santa' game. Guests bring wrapped gifts which are randomly redistributed. Everyone draws a number and unwraps their gift in order. After unwrapping, any gift can be exchanged for any other unwrapped gift. In other words, if your gift isn't as good as someone else's, you can steal it. But then someone later can steal it from you. Everyone still goes home with a gift, but the best gifts can change hands several times, usually ending up with those last to unwrap. I'm not sure how the name "Chinese Auction" came to be, but that's what they do in Hawaii for Christmas. My mother-in-law Lee Morey sets the table for Thanksgiving Dinner on the lanai of her Beach House in Kekaha, island of Kauai, Hawaii. I love the warmth and ambience of this house. It was actually too dark to take ordinary snapshots, and a flash would have been too harsh. So I simply set the camera down and took a long exposure of a few seconds. I don't think Lee even knew I was taking a shot. The open lanai is nice with sultry seabreezes in the night air. It's a far cry from the Thanksgivings of my youth buried in snow, fighting icy roads, cranking the heat while you drive. {44124|Here is a picture} of the lanai in the daytime. Lee admires a spectacular sunset from the deck of her Beach House in Kekaha on the island of Kauai, Hawaii. She invited Kirsten, Morey and me over for dinner, and although we've all seen plenty of great sunsets there before, this one was something incredible. The island of Niihau is in the far distance. Morey sings 'Happy Birthday' in the kitchen of the Beach House in Kekaha, island of Kauai, Hawaii. Earlier, her grandmother Lee had set a slice of pumpkin pie down in front of her. We have cake and pie so infrequently that Morey naturally assumed it was someone's birthday. This photo was taken on Sunday, October 31, 2004 and added to the web on Sunday, October 31, 2004. Joe sings and performs for Morey while Lee looks on. Moments earlier, Lee set a slice of pumpkin pie down in front of Morey. Morey started to sing 'Happy Birthday' and eventually Joe joined in. It wasn't anyone's birthday, just Morey's reaction to cake or pie. Morey is still dressed like a Fairy; it was Halloween night. I took this picture in the kitchen of the Beach House in Kekaha on the island of Kauai, Hawaii. This photo was taken on Sunday, October 31, 2004 and added to the web on Sunday, October 31, 2004.
