After cooking a big meal at the end of a long day, my mother-in-law Lee relaxes at the dinner table. I took this at her beach house in Kekaha. In the background, Morey talks to Joe. My mother-in-law Lee invited us over for dinner one Sunday night. She was staying at her beach house in Kekaha, and I really enjoy the warmth and ambience there. It was just about sunset when we arrived, and I took this photo from the back, towards the ocean. Joe is eventually going to put the stepping stones in the ground, he just happened to be arranging them that day. I was making dinner late one Friday afternoon after I got home from work. To keep the house cool, we sometimes close the curtains in the afternoon, which, unfortunately, kills our great ocean views. But luckily, I happened to walk outside just in time to see the sunset. I grabbed my camera when I saw the sun sitting in the sky like this. It was hazy to the west, and for about 90 seconds, the sun glowed an eerie hot pink. A tour boat sailed by, probably on its way back from the Na Pali coast. I was fortunate to have my camera nearby. I took this picture from the deck of my house on the westside of Kauai, Hawaii. This photo was taken on Friday, January 28, 2005 and added to the web on Friday, January 28, 2005. If you visit my website often, looking for new and interesting photos, it might be tiresome to find yet another sunset. But I never get tired of seeing them. My days can seem stressful or chaotic sometimes, but somehow, in the warm wonderful evening air, standing on the deck of our house, life once again becomes peaceful. More pragmatically, I also enjoy these moments because they justify our big mortgage. Kirsten and I recently had some trees cleared that obscured our view of the westside of Kauai. The island of Niihau can be seen in the far distance. Incidentally, the colors in this photo were not enhanced; this really is the scene captured by my camera. On the westside of Kauai, we've had tremendous rainfall in the past three days. My wife Kirsten drove through downtown Waimea on New Year's Day 2005, and was surprised to find the streets flooded. She stood near the Captain Cook Monument and snapped several photos from which I created this composite panorama. Be sure your browser's Image Resizing Feature is turned off so you can see the entire image {30159|How Do I Do That?}, but then you have to scroll left and right to see it all. The stitching of the pictures is a little imperfect, but you get a view of Waimea Road from Big Save to the First Hawaiian Bank building. Pretty impressive rainfall. Rain, rain, go away! Wow! I live on the westside of the island of Kauai, Hawaii. First, take a look at a our house. Note that we've had some trees removed that blocked our view. In the distance, on the shore, you can see the smokestack to the old Kekaha Sugar Mill. This photo was taken on Friday, December 31, 2004 and added to the web on Friday, December 31, 2004. Lee shows Morey how the top of the car goes down. It's a Mercedes-Benz SLK230 convertible. Lee gave it to Joe for Christmas 2004. I took these photos in the driveway of our house in Waimea. Kirsten and Kimberly are in the background. This photo was taken on Thursday, December 30, 2004 and added to the web on Friday, December 31, 2004. Image copyright 2010 polihale.com

On the morning of Christmas 2004, Joe went out to the deck of our house in Waimea to enjoy the view. He visits my wife and me so rarely usually we go to his house. I offered him my binoculars because he was particularly interested in some features of Kekaha, which is only a mile or two away. Soon enough, Morey came out to the deck and wanted to see for herself. Morey has looked through my binoculars before, and she can even identify the things she sees. The binoculars are 20x80 power. Holding them by hand produces a shakey image, so Joe is using a monopod. While Joe and Lee were getting ready to leave our house on Christmas Day, Morey saw the chance to get in the driver's seat of Joe's new car. Lee Morey's grandmother gave her husband Joe a Mercedes-Benz SLK230 convertible for Christmas. His debut drive was up to our house in Waimea on Christmas morning. It's hard to see, but behind the Mercedes, in the shadows of the carport, is another German convertible, my piece of shit Volkswagen Cabrio. I bought it new in 2001, but I've beaten it up pretty good. Plus, little things keep breaking. I know, it's hard to believe quality Mexican workmanship has defects. Maybe next year I'll be the one getting a Mercedes??? This photo was taken on Saturday, December 25, 2004 and added to the web on Sunday, December 26, 2004. Image copyright 2010 polihale.com

On Saturday night, I was having dinner at my wife's family beach house in Kekaha, island of Kauai, Hawaii. Around 7:30, fire trucks and rescue teams rushed to the neighborhood, then started slowly cruising up and down Kaumualii Highway, lights flashing, sirens on, with men on foot looking towards the ocean. I never got the official story, but I bet someone went missing in the water. People hang out on Kekaha Beach, especially on the weekends. They drink beer and, I guess, sometimes go swimming in the dark. When someone is reported missing, it's usually because they just walked off in the darkness; then someone panics and calls 911. In this photo, which is actually a long exposure, you can sort of make out the Kauai Fire Department rescue Humvee making a three-point turn on the highway. The long exposure lightens the evening sky; it was actually quite dark. I took this from the lanai of the beach house. My mother-in-law Lee Morey sets the table for Thanksgiving Dinner on the lanai of her Beach House in Kekaha, island of Kauai, Hawaii. I love the warmth and ambience of this house. It was actually too dark to take ordinary snapshots, and a flash would have been too harsh. So I simply set the camera down and took a long exposure of a few seconds. I don't think Lee even knew I was taking a shot. The open lanai is nice with sultry seabreezes in the night air. It's a far cry from the Thanksgivings of my youth buried in snow, fighting icy roads, cranking the heat while you drive. {44124|Here is a picture} of the lanai in the daytime. Lee admires a spectacular sunset from the deck of her Beach House in Kekaha on the island of Kauai, Hawaii. She invited Kirsten, Morey and me over for dinner, and although we've all seen plenty of great sunsets there before, this one was something incredible. The island of Niihau is in the far distance.
