The sunset as seen from Polihale Beach on the island of Kauai, Hawaii. Since Polihale is the westernmost point in the USA, these are the last rays of sunlight seen from American soil in the 20th Century. A long exposure of Lee and Kirsten decorating the Christmas tree. I deliberately took long exposures to cause the streaking of the lights, but it also causes ghosting. I liked the effect. I took this in Lee's house in Koloa, Island of Kauai, Hawaii. This photo was taken on Sunday, December 17, 2000 and added to the web on Tuesday, April 16, 2002. Image copyright 2010 polihale.com

Instead of helping her mom Lee decorate the tree, Kirsten sits and poses for this time-lapse picture the long exposure causes the ghosting. Actually, I should have been helping. I took this in Lee's house in Koloa, Island of Kauai, Hawaii. This photo was taken on Sunday, December 17, 2000 and added to the web on Saturday, March 30, 2002. Image copyright 2010 polihale.com

Kirsten gets a little crazy with the Christmas lights. I actually like the way this turned out. I think the exposure was 15 seconds, long enough to cause the streaking of the lights. I took this in the studio behind Kirsten's house in Koloa, Island of Kauai, Hawaii. This photo was taken on Sunday, December 17, 2000 and added to the web on Friday, April 26, 2002. This is the brilliant, lovely woman who agreed to marry me. She's a genius realtor and a great mom. Real estate prowess may not sound like a thrilling quality, but Kauai's housing market was fantastically bullish from 2000 to 2004. A month before we were married, she found a big house for us in Poipu. We really couldn't afford it, but I reluctantly agreed. Four years and three houses later, her ideas have generated some breathtaking capital gains, not to mention the breathtaking views from our house in Waimea. I'd probably be living in a cardboard box on Kekaha Beach if it weren't for her. This picture was taken at her friend Kathy's wedding in Lynchburg, Virginia.
