Another surreal scene from Poipu Beach Park in Poipu, island of Kauai, Hawaii. Infrared imagery has always fascinated me, but infrared film is difficult to work with. Using an IR filter with a digital camera opens up a whole new world, literally. I simply walked along the beach, shooting whatever scene I happened to find although the image in the viewfinder doesn't look like this; it's been enhanced and de-saturated. The beautiful world of infrared imagery comes to life at Poipu Beach Park in Poipu, island of Kauai, Hawaii. This was one of the very first images I captured on my digital camera with a new R72 IR filter. Compare this picture with {43160|this one} they both feature the same palm tree. A spectacular Hawaiian sunset. I wish I had taken this picture, but I didn't. Gary Stephens from XonTech shared this image with me his pictures are ALMOST as good as mine!. This really is an impressive image. The silhouettes are various radar facilities on Makaha Ridge, which sit atop the Na Pali coast on the island of Kauai, Hawaii. NASA's Helios solar-powered flying wing. I took this picture at NASA's cloth hangar on the westside of the island of Kauai, Hawaii. The hangar is actually stiff vinyl, not cloth, but the nickname stuck. This unmanned aircraft has already set several world records for altitude and duration. Development of a regenerative hydrogen-oxygen energy storage system which would make the multi-day continuous flight possible is progressing. The system uses excess power generated by the solar arrays during the daytime to run an electrolyzer that separates water into its component parts, hydrogen and oxygen, which are then stored under pressure in specially-designed tanks. At night, the hydrogen and oxygen are recombined by the fuel cells, producing electricity as a by-product to power Helios' motors and systems. NASA's Helios solar-powered flying wing being prepared for another flight. I took this picture to show off its length. The craft has a wingspan of 247 feet 75.2 meters, which is longer than either the Boeing 747 jetliner or Lockheed C-5 transport aircraft. Harvesting the sugar fields out on the westide of the island of Kauai, Hawaii. I took this picture from the side of the road between Kekaha and Polihale Beach. Burning the sugar cane is part of the harvesting process. This photo was taken on Thursday, June 5, 2003 and added to the web on Tuesday, June 10, 2003. Image copyright 2010 polihale.com

I obtained this panoramic image by stitching together two wide-angle pictures. The stitching is imperfect, but I wanted to show the cliffs in the distance that overlook Polihale Beach. I took this picture from the side of the road between Kekaha and Polihale Beach on the westide of the island of Kauai, Hawaii. Burning the sugar cane is part of the harvesting process. Sometimes the smoke from the fires drifts onto the highway. I tell people that the smoke from burning sugar cane is not smokey at all, but smells rather pleasant and sweet, like baking with lots of cinnamon. You can see part of the complex irrigation system on both sides of the sugar field. This photo was taken on Thursday, June 5, 2003 and added to the web on Tuesday, June 10, 2003. Morey and Kirsten in the water at Poipu Beach Park in Poipu, Island of Kauai, Hawaii. Morey had been in the ocean before, but only up to her waist and only for a minute. This was her first real venture into the ocean. She didn't like it in the beginning, but soon began enjoying herself more than we expected. 11:30 in the morning at Polihale Beach on the island of Kauai, Hawaii. It's impossible to produce a faithful photograph of Polihale Beach. It's something you feel, not just see. Nevertheless, here's a photo that showcases the pristine, vast emptiness. This photo was taken on Friday, May 30, 2003 and added to the web on Saturday, January 10, 2004. Polihale Beach on the island of Kauai, Hawaii. I went there on my lunchhour one day. It was a beautiful sunny day, the kind that make you want to take the rest of the day off. I took some pictures; none of them were great, but I liked this one for some reason. It looks like a painting somehow; the product of someone's imagination. If I could paint, I'd probably paint this kind of scene. This photo was taken on Friday, May 30, 2003 and added to the web on Saturday, January 10, 2004. Image copyright 2010 polihale.com

A warm spring afternoon at Poipu Beach Park in Poipu, island of Kauai, Hawaii. I stopped by the beach on my way home from work one day and decided to shoot some pictures. I sometimes carry my camera with me all day in case the mood strikes me. This photo was taken on Monday, May 19, 2003 and added to the web on Saturday, May 24, 2003. Phase Two of the Kauai Technology Center, located in Waimea, island of Kauai, Hawaii. When this picture was taken in May 2003, the center was nearly complete, but still vacant. Several high-tech military contractors are expected to populate the center later this year. I took this picture by zooming in from an overlook along the Waimea Canyon Road. Across the street, you can see some of the palms from the Waimea Plantation Cottages. This photo was taken on Friday, May 16, 2003 and added to the web on Sunday, May 25, 2003. Baby Morey sleeps in her car seat at a gas station in Koloa, island of Kauai, Hawaii. She was a little cranky on the ride home one day, and when I got out to pump gas, I was surprised to find her passed out. So surprised that I just had to take the shot. The gas station attendant obviously a parent, too even stuck her head out to ask, You like to remember them that way, don't you?
