Joe slowly crosses Hanakapiai Stream. Despite being a sunny summertime day in Hawaii, the stream is cold, and certainly a shock to step into suddenly. We stopped here at Hanakapiai Beach during an all-day hike from Kee Beach to Hanakapiai Falls on the north shore of Kauai, Hawaii. Though the stream is pretty small, it's still a challenge to cross see {44096|this picture} taken earlier that day. This is a wonderful overhead view of Kee Beach, its crystal-clear waters and its fringing reef on the north shore of Kauai, Hawaii. I took this picture from the Kalalau Trail on my way back from Hanakapiai Beach. The Kalalau Trail is muddy and often shadeless, but the views are incredible. The trail quickly rises several hundred feet up after the trailhead, providing these awesome "aerial" views. Bruce and I were flying around the island when I took this aerial photo of Polihale Beach on the westside of Kauai, Hawaii. The access road to Polihale Beach is that thin little dirt strip stuck between the sugar fields and the sand dunes. {43318|Here is another} perspective of the access road, but from the ground. The Cathedral actually, this area has several nicknames -- including The Pinnacles -- but I'm not sure there is an official name. This is on the Na Pali coast on the island of Kauai, Hawaii. Completely inaccessible by land, you can only see these massive and beautiful cliffs from the air. I'd love to go back with a wider-angle lens and re-shoot this area. I took this aerial photo during a flight with Bruce. This photo was taken on Saturday, June 26, 2004 and added to the web on Sunday, June 27, 2004. Image copyright 2010 polihale.com

A Bell 206 helicopter from Bali Hai Helicopters departs Nualolo Valley on the Na Pali coast of the island of Kauai, Hawaii. The Na Pali coast is spectacular, but a faithful photograph is impossible, especially without any size references. So I took this aerial picture with the helicopter in the shot to give some perspective. I shot this during a flight around Kauai with Bruce. A survey of the sleepy rural town of Kekaha on Kauai's westside in Hawaii. Kekaha, which means simply, The Place, is America's westernmost town, and probably one of the sunniest with more than 350 sunny days a year. But on the day I flew to get this picture, it was cloudy. Go figure. The Kekaha Sugar Mill can easily been seen in the center I'm still not sure if the red dirt color was part of the building's original paint scheme, or if it became that color over the years. Kekaha once had a railroad for bringing sugar cane to the port at Eleele. Hawaii's first and last train robbery occurred here in February 1920, when a masked gunman stopped a slow-moving sugar train and escaped with the locomotive and $11, 000 taken from the labor paymaster on board. Police recovered the money in a swamp near the home of a local fisherman, whose suspicious behavior soon resulted in his arrest and conviction. The fisherman was a big fan of Western movies, and was thought to have been inspired by some of the films he had seen. I took this aerial photo when I was flying with Bruce. In June 2004, Kirsten and I bought the Waimea House. It's the grey house on the corner with the tall cypress trees and the dried-out lawn. This small neighborhood is Waimea Heights on the westside of Kauai, Hawaii. I took this aerial photo when I was flying with Bruce. I like this photo because you can see that our neighbors across the street are backed right up to a sheer 700-foot cliff edge 213 meters. A nice aerial view of the Marriott Kauai on Kalapaki Beach in Lihue, island of Kauai, Hawaii. If you ever get the chance, try Duke's Restaurant inside the Marriott. It has ocean views and for Kirsten and me, it's one of our favorites. Look closely and you can see surfers in the water, waiting for a big wave. Bruce and I were approaching Lihue airport when I took this picture. This photo was taken on Saturday, June 26, 2004 and added to the web on Monday, June 28, 2004. Image copyright 2010 polihale.com

An aerial view of Kauai Coffee's processing plant and some of their 6500 acres of coffee beans. This area is between Kalaheo and Eleele on the island of Kauai, Hawaii. Port Allen can be seen in the distant background. I took this photo during an island tour with Bruce. The road in the photo is Route 540, also known as McBryde Mill Road. This same road is featured in {43272|this picture} I took in 2003. This photo was taken on Saturday, June 26, 2004 and added to the web on Sunday, June 27, 2004. Image copyright 2010 polihale.com

Dwarfed by the massive cliffs, a lone kayaker enjoys the pristine water off Nualolo Kai State Park on the Na Pali coast of Kauai, Hawaii. In the summertime, the water along the northwestern shore is flat, sometimes as flat as a lake. The northwestern shore is also accessible only by boat. In the wintertime, kayaking is often impossible due to big swells. I took this aerial photo during a flight with Bruce. This photo was taken on Saturday, June 26, 2004 and added to the web on Monday, June 28, 2004. Image copyright 2010 polihale.com

In June 2004, Kirsten and I bought the Waimea House, located in the Waimea Heights neighborhood on the westside of Kauai, Hawaii. The highway is the Waimea Canyon Road. It's also easy to see a sugar field irrigation ditch; it's the horizontal band that runs lateral across the face of the ridge above the homes. I took this aerial photo when I was flying with Bruce. I like this photo because you can see that our neighbors across the street are backed right up to a sheer 700-foot cliff edge 213 meters. The Kekaha Beach House in sleepy Kekaha, island of Kauai, Hawaii it's the beachfront house in the middle. I took this aerial photo when I was flying with Bruce. This photo was taken on Saturday, June 26, 2004 and added to the web on Monday, July 12, 2004. Image copyright 2010 polihale.com
