Final approach! I took this picture while on approach to Runway 21 at Lihue International Airport in Lihue on the island of Kauai, Hawaii. In this low-altitude aerial photo, you can see the towering Haupu mountain range just south of the airport. Bruce unseen is sitting next to me, at the right. This is an early-morning aerial vew of Polihale Beach on the westside of Kauai, Hawaii. Mid-day or afternoon light would have been better, but I was circling the island on a photo flight with Bruce. From this altitude, you can see the towering cliffs that overshadow the beach. If you haven't done so already, {10018|read the legends of Polihale Beach} about how ghosts and spirts would leap from these cliffs to get to the afterworld. Welcome to Kauai! This is an aerial view of the big city of Lihue on the island of Kauai, Hawaii. "Big city" is really a joke. It's a small town by most standards, but how many small towns are also a port-of-call and have an international airport? In the immediate foreground with the shiny roof is the new Home Depot. When it opened in 2003, it was a major social event on Kauai; more than 15, 000 people showed up. To the left is Kukui Grove Shopping Center. In the far distance is Nawiliwili Harbor, which can serve large cruise ships it's deeper than it looks. A nice overhead view of Kauai Community College in Lihue, island of Kauai, Hawaii. I took this photo just before landing after a 90-minute aerial tour with Bruce. In Hawaii, the community college system is part of the University of Hawaii UH. All classes and credits taken here can be easily transferred up to a UH four-year degree program. In fact, through remote classes, you can now earn a four-year degree right here at this campus. When I first moved to Hawaii in 1989, I had to pick between the Big Island and Kauai there is a UH campus on the Big Island. On a whim, I chose the Big Island. Years later, I eventually moved to Kauai. But who knows how my life would have turned out if I'd moved here first? It's likely that my whole life would be different today. I think about that everytime I drive by this campus. This photo was taken on Tuesday, December 14, 2004 and added to the web on Saturday, December 18, 2004. Image copyright 2010 polihale.com |

My mother-in-law Lee Morey sets the table for Thanksgiving Dinner on the lanai of her Beach House in Kekaha, island of Kauai, Hawaii. I love the warmth and ambience of this house. It was actually too dark to take ordinary snapshots, and a flash would have been too harsh. So I simply set the camera down and took a long exposure of a few seconds. I don't think Lee even knew I was taking a shot. The open lanai is nice with sultry seabreezes in the night air. It's a far cry from the Thanksgivings of my youth buried in snow, fighting icy roads, cranking the heat while you drive. {44124|Here is a picture} of the lanai in the daytime. Lee admires a spectacular sunset from the deck of her Beach House in Kekaha on the island of Kauai, Hawaii. She invited Kirsten, Morey and me over for dinner, and although we've all seen plenty of great sunsets there before, this one was something incredible. The island of Niihau is in the far distance. Morey sings 'Happy Birthday' in the kitchen of the Beach House in Kekaha, island of Kauai, Hawaii. Earlier, her grandmother Lee had set a slice of pumpkin pie down in front of her. We have cake and pie so infrequently that Morey naturally assumed it was someone's birthday. This photo was taken on Sunday, October 31, 2004 and added to the web on Sunday, October 31, 2004. Joe sings and performs for Morey while Lee looks on. Moments earlier, Lee set a slice of pumpkin pie down in front of Morey. Morey started to sing 'Happy Birthday' and eventually Joe joined in. It wasn't anyone's birthday, just Morey's reaction to cake or pie. Morey is still dressed like a Fairy; it was Halloween night. I took this picture in the kitchen of the Beach House in Kekaha on the island of Kauai, Hawaii. This photo was taken on Sunday, October 31, 2004 and added to the web on Sunday, October 31, 2004. Kirsten gets Morey ready for her first evening of Trick-or-Treating. Morey's initials spell MAB and it wasn't until she was a few days old before someone realized that in Shakespeare, Mab is the Queen of the Fairies. So, of course, Morey was dressed as her namesake, Mab. I took this picture at the Waimea House in Waimea, on the island of Kauai, Hawaii. Morey walks in the shallow end of the pool at Kiahuna Plantation in Poipu, island of Kauai, Hawaii. It was my birthday this day and the US federal government was shut down in observance. What better birthday gift in a busy life than to go swimming with the family? Actually, it was the Columbus Day holiday -- oops, I mean "Discoverer's Day", whatever the Hell THAT is. When I was a kid, Columbus was a 500-year old cultural icon. But somehow, in just 10 or 15 years, he's become an icon of racism and hatred. I wonder what it is I'm supposed to be celebrating the discovery of? White guilt? The radical liberal takeover of academia? This is Morey at the end of the slide at the Kiahuna Plantation pool in Poipu, island of Kauai, Hawaii. Kirsten's hands are visible, but she's underwater. This is one of Morey's favorite places to swim. This photo was taken on Monday, October 11, 2004 and added to the web on Monday, October 11, 2004. Image copyright 2010 polihale.com |

Another splendid non-stop sunset in the western skies -- ah, the simple pleasures of life. Kirsten and Morey and I were sitting on the deck of our new house Saturday evening when I took this photo. Believe it or not, the brilliance and saturation of the colors is typical. I didn't use any filters and the colors in this image have not been enhanced in any way. This is the way the camera saw them. Of course, I used a 350mm telephoto lens to capture the scene, and I've noticed that zoom lenses appear to saturate sunset colors. Anyway, this is the nightly show from the Waimea Heights subdivision on the island of Kauai, Hawaii. The northern coastal plains of Niihau can be seen on the horizon at the left. Lehua Rock is clearly visible on the right. In the foreground, you can see the smokestack from the old Kekaha Sugar Mill in Kekaha. Compare this photo to {43190|this one}. At the time this photo was taken, Kirsten and Morey and I had been living in the Waimea House for just five days. We love the big deck. We watch every sunset. At night, it's cool and breezy and you can sit out under the stars. Besides the ocean view, we have an unobstructed view of Waimea Canyon Road as it ascends towards Waimea Canyon. I sat out on the deck and waited for a car to go by so I could shoot this long exposure. The Big Dipper is directly above the road. This was taken, of course, in Waimea, on the beautiful westside of Kauai, Hawaii. This photo was taken on Saturday, August 28, 2004 and added to the web on Monday, August 30, 2004. This is a neat little panoramic shot taken from the front seat of an Augusta 109A helicopter. I was flying across the Kaulakahi Channel from Niihau to Kauai in Hawaii you can see Kauai in the distance. Dana is at the controls. I took three photos with a 19mm lens and stitched them together afterwards using software. The stitching is a little imperfect, but it still gives a nice wide-angle feel for the first-class ride 400 feet above the ocean blue. Tall Man Joe, a steely-eyed master backgammon player, takes a midday break near the reef south of Polihale Beach somewhere on the westside of Kauai, Hawaii. Lehua Rock and Niihau Island can be seen in the far distance. This photo was taken on Monday, July 26, 2004 and added to the web on Tuesday, July 27, 2004. Image copyright 2010 polihale.com |
