Morey (in the foreground, on the left, in the two-piece white bathing suit) approaches the waters of Waikoko Beach with one of her friends from Island School. The Island School kindergarten class was on an overnight camping trip to the north shore of Kauai, Hawaii. Waikoko is on the extreme western edge of Hanalei Bay. The skies were hazy because of volcanic fog that had drifted all the way here from the Kilauea Volcano on the Big Island. Morey at Waikoko Beach on the north shore of Kauai, Hawaii. She was here with her kindergarten class from Island School. Waikoko is on the extreme western edge of Hanalei Bay, so it's uncrowded and devoid of sunburned tourists. The haze was from volcanic fog from the Big Island. This photo was taken on Thursday, May 15, 2008 and added to the web on Sunday, May 25, 2008.

This is the Ninole Post Office on the Big Island of Hawaii. I'm not certain, but I suspect this is the smallest Post Office in the United States. I took this while hiking across the Big Island. This is the Mauna Lani Hotel on the Big Island of Hawaii. I took this aerial photo during a commissioned photo shoot of another property. This photo was taken on Saturday, February 26, 2005 and added to the web on Monday, December 15, 2008. Image copyright 2010 polihale.com

On the day I took this photo, the forecast in Buffalo, NY was: Kona on the Big Island of Hawaii. People asked of me, 'Why did you move to Hawaii?' The answer's in the question. This is Hapuna Beach on the Big Island of Hawaii. I took this photo near sunset. In the wintertime, you can swim in the warm water and look up and see snow on the summit of Mauna Kea. How cool is that? This photo was taken on Sunday, January 2, 2005 and added to the web on Wednesday, February 9, 2005. Image copyright 2010 polihale.com

A nice overhead view of Kauai Community College in Lihue, island of Kauai, Hawaii. I took this photo just before landing after a 90-minute aerial tour with Bruce. In Hawaii, the community college system is part of the University of Hawaii UH. All classes and credits taken here can be easily transferred up to a UH four-year degree program. In fact, through remote classes, you can now earn a four-year degree right here at this campus. When I first moved to Hawaii in 1989, I had to pick between the Big Island and Kauai there is a UH campus on the Big Island. On a whim, I chose the Big Island. Years later, I eventually moved to Kauai. But who knows how my life would have turned out if I'd moved here first? It's likely that my whole life would be different today. I think about that everytime I drive by this campus. This photo was taken on Tuesday, December 14, 2004 and added to the web on Saturday, December 18, 2004. Image copyright 2010 polihale.com

Under the massive peaks of Mauna Kea, kids play in the tidal pools at Onekahakaha Beach. If you look closely, you can even see some of the observatories at the summit. I took this picture in Hilo Town on the Big Island of Hawaii. Because Hilo's clouds often obscure the foothills and summit of Mauna Kea, these clear skies were a treat. The Grand Staircase at the Hilton Waikoloa Village formerly the Hyatt Regency Waikoloa. I've always liked the architecture here. I worked at this resort several years ago and often got off work at night. I would walk down here to see the wonderful interaction of light and shadow. I took this long exposure picture at night during a short vacation Kirsten and I took to the Big Island of Hawaii. I liked this picture so much, I even made it available as wallpaper. Baby Morey, Kirsten and me. This picture is actually a reflection in a large mirror near the Grand Ballroom of the Hilton Waikoloa Village on the Big Island of Hawaii. A long exposure of the passenger train as it runs through the lobby of the Hilton Waikoloa Village. I worked at this resort back when it was called the Hyatt Regency Waikoloa, and I had a hard time convincing my friends back on the Mainland that this hotel really has boats and trains to carry passengers to their rooms; and that some guest rooms are more than a mile 1.6 km from the front desk. This resort is in Waikoloa on the Big Island of Hawaii. This photo was taken on Saturday, October 11, 2003 and added to the web on Monday, October 13, 2003. Image copyright 2010 polihale.com

This image filesize is large, more than one megabyte. But it's a neat panoramic shot of the lagoon at the Hilton Waikoloa Village from the Grand Staircase to the Water's Edge Ballroom. I took this during a short visit to Waikoloa on the Big Island of Hawaii. Be sure to turn off your browser's Image Resizing feature to maximize its resolution. But then you'll need to scroll left and right to see it all. This photo was taken on Saturday, October 11, 2003 and added to the web on Tuesday, October 14, 2003. Image copyright 2010 polihale.com

One of the many charms of flying interisland in Hawaii is the informal nature of small airport operations. At the Kona International Airport at Keahole, for example, there are no jetways those long, tube-like hallways that reach out from the terminal to the aircraft. There is no terminal at Kona like at other airports. Instead, passengers wait under open-air wooden pavillions, then board the planes with old 1960's-style jet stairs. Charming, but impractical in terms of airport security. Which unfortunately means that this will all probably change someday in the future with the increasing security since September 11. I took this picture while waiting for a flight at the Kona airport on the Big Island of Hawaii. I didn't take this through a glass window, I literally walked to a pavillion with a good view; there is almost nothing to separate waiting aircraft from waiting passengers. The pristine waters of Kailua Bay at the oceanfront along Alii Drive in Kailua-Kona on the Big Island of Hawaii. The historic King Kamehameha Hotel is in the distant background, partially obscured by Monkeypod trees. Once a year, this stretch of Alii Drive becomes the finish line of the Ironman Triathlon. An aerial view of the area around Kona airport at Keahole on the Big Island of Hawaii. "Welcome to the moon!" is what one taxi driver told me he always says to tourists who land here for the first time. A vacation in Hawaii normally conjures up imagery of lush greenery and beaches. Few people coming here for the first time expect to see miles of barren lava fields. Some folks are shocked outright. The leeward side of the Big Island is so dry that the elements have left a 200-year old lava flow unchanged. I took this picture from a Hawaiian Airlines interisland flight as it departed Kona airport you can see the taxiway in the foreground and Hualalai mountain in the background.
